Webit becomes the largest platform for inspiring the next generation of...

For the second year in a row, history is being created in Bulgarian capital Sofia. So far no one in the world has ever made such effort to inspire the talented young people of a nation and meet them face to face with their future. But this is what is going to happen during the Webit.X initiative. The event was announced at a joint press conference by the Chairman of Webit.Foundation, Dr. Plamen Russev, the Minister of Education and Science of Bulgaria, Krasimir Valchev and the President of the Council of Rectors of the Higher Education Institutions in Bulgaria, Prof. Dr. Eng. Lyuben Totev. Webit.X will be the largest platform in the world for inspiring the young people of a single nation. The event will take place on 14th of May at 18:30 in Hall 1 of the National Palace of Culture as part of the program of Webit.Festival Europe 2019 - the largest festival for innovation, digital technology and entrepreneurship on the continent. Within Webit.X, Bulgarian high school and college students will have the opportunity to experience incredible technologies and see with their own eyes robots with artificial intelligence, flying machines of the future and hear invaluable advices from their creators. Here you can see a video from the last edition of the initiative: Webit.X is a joint initiative between Webit.Foundation and the Ministry of Education and Science of Bulgaria and is under the patronage of Minister Krasimir Valchev. The Ministry will select and award the most talented and successful students of Bulgaria. “No one in history has ever done anything like this. 3000 children from all over Bulgaria will see the future with their eyes. If we can change the future path of only one child in Bulgaria, so it can take its moonshot, it would be amazing. But I can assure you that it will not be just one child”, said Dr. Plamen Russev. According to him, Webit realizes that it can not force someone to do something about their future. But it can inspire people to dream and make their own life and the lives of many others better. This is the reason for the creation of Webit.X project - to inspire the future of Bulgaria. Due to the huge success of last edition of the festival, this time it will be held at the National Palace of Culture (NDK). Webit.Festival is so large, that additional facilities will be built in front of NDK to accommodate the thousands of guests at the event. Webit expects to welcome 15 000 visitors from 120 countries. More than 450 speakers will be features on the stages, including top entrepreneurs, politicians, scientists, investors and startup companies. Webit’s goal is not only to create contacts between innovation systems and entrepreneurs, but also to inspire a better future for Bulgaria, Europe and the world. The common task with the Ministry of Education and Science is to provide the excellent students with access to the latest technological inventions in the world. [caption id="attachment_6116" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Bulgarian Minister of Education and Science Krasimir Valchev[/caption] “Webit can inspire students to develop their interests and abilities in important technological areas such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, biotechnology, bioengineering and countless other interdisciplinary sciences. The future of Blockchain spreads way beyond cryptocurrencies

Two years ago cryptocurrencies took the world by storm, which made Blockchain the new buzzworld of businesses around the world. Today, we can almost certainly say that Bitcoin’s price will not return to almost $20 000, but this does not mean that Blockchain was all part of the natural boom and bust cycle. In fact, the amazing technology will be a bigger part of our future than many can predict. We are hearing more and more about fintech, virtual tokens, digital assets, cryptocurrencies (not just the ones we already know), smart contracts and initial coin offerings. Each of these concepts rely on Blockchain technology. Blockchain has the potential to influence every aspect of the global economy and its applications are already developing faster than most governments and regulators can manage. Some countries like Bermuda has already made significant regulatory advances gathering international attention. In October 2018 the logal government has awarded the first certification for an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) under the island nation’s new regulatory regime for crypto and blockchain businesses. The legislation require ICO issuers to provide detailed information about all persons involved in the process. The future of Blockchain will be among the main topics of Webit.Festival Europe 2019 - the largest Digital & Tech event in the continent. On 14th of May at the Industry Stage the guests of the event will be able to hear predictions for the development of this amazing technology in the next 10 years from some of the best in the business. Blockchain has highlighted a critical aspect of the way data is going to work in the coming decades, and that is a world where data will be ever increasingly distributed. Dubai has already vowed to replace all government systems with Distributed ledger technology based digital structure by the end of next year. This indicates that DLT will only grow over time. One of the main obstacles before the mass blockchain implementation will be the standartization and interoperability among different blockchains. The development of open standard will be the thing that will bring true benefits for the consumer of enterprise. Experts predict that by 2030, most governments around the world will create or adopt some form of virtual currency. Despite of the fail in Bitcoin prices, cryptocurrencies have many advantages compared to the traditional alternatives. They are more efficient, provide reduced settlement times and offer increased traceability. Cryptocurrency can also be backed by real assets, similar to fiat currency, and its price can be artificially manipulated by numerous controls. In the short term, government-based cryptocurrency will become an area of experimentation and explorations, led mostly by developing nations with unstable economies and weak institutions. Come to Webit.Festival Europe to learn about the latest trends in Blockchain from top level experts. During the talks at Industry Stage you will be able to listen to global leaders, such as the Chief Marketing Officer of Tokyo Chapger Government Blockchain Association, Kohei Kurihara, the Co-Founder and CTO of Cindicator, Yuri Lobyntsev, the Global Ambassador of Bitfury, Marc Taverner, the Partner at Blockchain Rookies, Jon Walsh, the investor Alexander Shulgin, the Founding Partner at SpaceFund, Rick Tumlinson, the VP for Global Business Services at IBM, Johan van den Arend Schmidt and many others. Corporate and personal responsibility will lead our path to sustainable future

In years of unprecedented technological advancements our societies are realizing more and more that our development as species comes with huge cost for the environment. For the last several decades we are talking a lot about the human effects on climate, but recently there is another issue that is grabbing our attention - the huge problem with plastic pollution. Plastics are durable, light and versatile. However, they take up to 400 years to decompose. This will affect people’s lives for the next 16 generations. Our excessive use of plastics is impacting ocean health and biodiversity. By 2050, there could be more plastics in the ocean than fish by weight. According to WWF, 91% of all plastics used on Earth are not recycled. Their production uses as much fossil fuel as airlines. 99% of plastics are contributing to climate change. Almost all marine animals are under threat А recent study, published in Marine Pollution Bulletine, shows that fisheries, aquaculture, recreational activities and global wellbein are all negatively affected by plastics. The estimated decline in the benefits humans derive from oceans is between 1% and 5%. The resulting cost in such benefits, known as marine ecosystem value is up to $2.5 trillion a year. The topic of our sustainable future and the decisions that enterprises and policy makers need to make in order to leave a better world for the future generations will be among the main points of discussion during the upcoming Webit.Festival Europe - the largest Digital & Tech event in Europe. At the start of 2019 the EU Parliament approved a law banning a wide range of single-use plastic items, such as straws, cotton buds and cutlery, by 2021. The proposition was supported by 560 Members of the Parliament against 35. They also agreed a target to collect and recycle 90% of beverage bottles by 2029. “Europe is setting new and ambitious standards, paving the way for the rest of the world”, the European Commission’s first vice-president Frans Timmermans, who is responsible for sustainable development said. Under the new European law, tobacco companies will be required to cover the costs for the collection of cigarette butts and manufacturers of fishing gear will also have to pay for the retrieval of any plastic nets that have been left at sea. The private sector is also coming in line with the global initiatives. Last month, Etihad Airways made its first fligh without any single-use plastics on board. According to the company, this marks the first time an airline in the region has undertaken such challenge. The move is part of Etihad’s overall strategy to reduce single-use plastics in its organization by 80% by the end of 2022. Come to Webit.Festival Europe and learn about the steps that world has to make to build its sustainable future. During the event you will get the chance to listen to top enterprise, science and policy leaders, such as the Airbus Defence and Space CEO Dirk Hoke, the Senior Parther at McKinsey & Co Paul Willmott, the VP of Amazon Paul Misener, the EU Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society Mariya Gabriel, the Deputy Director-General of World Trade Organization Yonov Frederick Agah and many others. Robots will create a new way of interaction between human and...

In the next several decades the increasing role of robots will most likely be the most dramatic change we will experience in our everyday life. Recent studies in developed countries show that the more than 50% of the people are certain that within the next 50 years, a robot will be part of every household. This shows that many societies, or at least the young people that will experience full scale of those changes already accepted them as part of their future. Today, robots are not perceived as a threat, but as an instrument that will change the way we communicate with machines and our attitude towards them. In the years to come we will need to ask ourselves both practical and ethical questions about the integration of robots. And many of them will be discussed during the Innovate & Plenary Sessionof Webit.Festival Europe - the largest event for innovations and entrepreneurship in this part of the world. Our perception of robots will form the values and culture in the Digital Age. The mass automation will change entirely the landscape of manufacturing and many service sectors and both create new jobs and erase some. While pessimists think that robots will completely jeopardize todays jobs and machine journalists, doctors and lawyers will replace human experts, optimists predict that the problems of human relationships will be overcome by replaceable robot partners. During Webit.Festival Europe the guests of the event will be able to meet with two of the most interesting conceptual robots that the world can offer today. The CTO of Realbotix, Guile Lindroth will present us the first companion robot with advanced AI - Harmony. At first you may think of her as a chat bot with a fancy body, but once you spend time with her, you start asking yourself if this is the prototype of the AI partner of the future. Last year Forbes listed robotic companions as the most unexpected disruptive tech. The creators of Harmony started their experiments years ago, while thay were developing silicon prosthetics for the movie industry. Today, they are ready to change the lives of thousands and create new opportunities for human-machine communication. While the role of Harmony may look too futuristic for many, machines like Furhat will probably be part of our everyday life really soon. The social robot that communicate with humans with self learning social skills will be presented by the CEO of Furhat Robotics, Samer Al Moubayed. In its official website, the company says that Furhat is ready to meet us in the real world. It can serve customers, provide companionship, train employees, or teach a language. The only limit is our own immagionation. Come to Webit.Festival Europe and learn about the future of robots and their role in the future of our career, social life and even personal communications. During Innovate! & Plenary Session you will get the chance to listen to top enterprise, science and policy leaders, such as the Serial Entrepreneur Mark Cuban, the Airbus Defense and Space CEO Dirk Hoke, the Senior Parther at McKinsey & Co Paul Willmott, The VP of Amazon Web Services Sandy Carter and VP of Amazon Paul Misener, the EU Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society Mariya Gabriel, the Deputy Director-General of World Trade Organization Yonov Frederick Agah and many others. How to invest in people and build the foundations of future...

In times of drastic social and economic changes, like the ones we live in, knowledge about the future can be a crucial factor for building it the right way. As Malcolm X once said - Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today! The massive potential of technological advancements in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, Quantum Computing, Automation and Robotics should make us think how we need to educate our kids and develop their skill sets for the demand of the future. The AI and Automation will surely make many manual, repetitive jobs obsolete. But as any tech advancements in the past, the ones that are before us will certainly create many occupations that we can hardly even dream of. According to the Founder of Alibaba Group, Jack Ma, if we keep the 200 years old knowledge-based approach our children will never be able to compete with machines. Instead, kids should be taught soft skills like independent thinking and team work. Of course, changing the education system will require a lot of money. In 2017, the edtech (education technology) investments in the US surpassed a record high of $9.5 billion. Forecasts show that the AI in education market is set to go past $6 billion by 2024. The topic of education, among many others, will be discussed during the Innovate! & Plenary Session of this year’s Webit.Festival Europe - the largest event for innovations and entrepreneurship in this part of the world. Many experts, such as the Director of the London School of Economics, Minouche Shafik, believe that changing our education system will be an essential part of the process of fixing the fractures in our societies and avoiding a tilt towards populism. She thinks that more and more people realize that the system of today will not work in their benefit, so they are looking to vote for anti-system players, such as Donald Trump for example. Of course, this does not mean that the populists will rule Europe and the world, but it is a strong sing for the establishment to start the process of changing itself to meet the demand of tomorrow. In a relatively near future technology will allow us to learn anything almost instantly. Our brains will be boosted with special implants that will help us memorize information - an advancement that will improve our lives dramatically. Just imagine a time when you don’t need to spend 16 years in different forms of educational institutions, so that you can get a degree. Such implants will help us personalize the education we get and learn the most suitable information for our skills. With the implants of tomorrow, we will basically have a search engine in our heads and we will be able to get all information that is online on demand, instead of knowing it. Come to Webit.Festival Europe and learn about the major steps that world’s policy makers and corporate leaders will need to take to create the infrastructure of tomorrow and protect us from the threats that will come with it. What steps we need to take to secure the future of...

We are all living in a time of exponential change both in our societies and economics. The new industrial revolution and the rise of robots and automation will change dramatically the way we live, communicate and entertain ourselves. But probably the most crucial change will come in our workplace, where we will need a completely new set of skills to stay competitive. According to the annual Future of Jobs Report, issued by the WEF, by 2020, more than a third of the desired core skill sets of most occupations will be consist of skills that are not yet considered crucial to the job today. Soon we will all need to make a serious effort to develop our soft skills, such as persuasion, emotional intelligence and the ability to teach others. Experts think that there will be a higher demand for such abilities, than the narrow technical skills. This, among many other topics, will be discussed during the Innovate! & Plenary Session of this year’s Webit.Festival Europe - the largest event for innovations and entrepreneurship in this part of the world. Students today think that getting a four-year university degree is the only way to become part of a global company such as Google, Apple or Amazon. But business leaders like the CEO of Siemens USA Barbara Humpton and her colleague in Apple Tim Cook are already questioning this old-fashioned career path. Recently Cook pointed out that the US employment at Apple includes a lot of people who did not have degrees. And the main reason for that is the fact that most of the colleges do not teach the skills business leaders need, such as coding for example. According to a LinkedIn report, prominent companies do not require that employees have college degrees. The data analysis of the social network identified, tha positions like electronic technicians, mechanical designers and marketing representatives are offered to people with no education but having the required skill set. The main drivers of this exponential changes in our work requirements are four processes: high-speed mobile internet, Artificial Intelligence, adoption of Big Data analytics and Cloud Technology. If we want to prevent a catastrophic processes in the society like mass unemployment, business and educational leaders will have to take an active role and help the workers today with re-skilling and up-skilling. While this process will unfold on a global scale, it will also be a major challenge for the new European Commission that will be appointed after the elections for Members of the European Parliament at the end of May. The new governing body will need to develop a continent-wide strategy for developing its human resource, in order for the continent to stay competitive with new global powers, such as China, who have a more centralized authority. Come to Webit.Festival Europe and learn about the major steps that European policy makers and corporate leaders will need to take to create a secure job market for us and for the generations to come. The DApps Era is coming – the future of Blockchain adoption

Hsuan Lee, the VP of Engineering of COBINHOOD, the first zero trading fee exchange in the world, and as of January this year - came to Webit.Festival 2018 in Sofia and discussed the topic of blockchain implementation and future.

The DApps Era is coming

Back in 1991, many of you remember when the websites obsession was huge - the largest companies began with it. The transition towards search engines like Google and Yahoo was more or less smooth until they became viral. The appearance of sharing platforms appeared naturally - youtube, myspace, blogspots, etc. Some of the platforms disrupted and stayed, others disappeared and many, many more appeared. A couple of years ago Messenger, whatsapp and instagram, to name a few - everybody talked about these and while they’re widely used today, the hype over them disappeared. In 2017 - 2018  the most talked about technology advancements are the crypto-blockchain platforms. We are, very naturally, transitioning towards DApps era - or post apps era, role of apps is increasing and becoming more important rather than steady. All of this transition may seem ‘natural’, however, appearance and longevity process is way more difficult. Geoffrey A. Moore’s “Crossing the Chasm” theory applies to basically any sphere. Hsuan explained the technology adoption cycle in the following way: The innovators are about 2,5 % of all the population. The heart of all high tech startups is a product that spawned from a small group of passionate scientists.

The early adopters take up about 13,5 %.

This is the ‘chasm’ to which companies pay little attention to once a company is over hyped by the success of market entry. This is the worst place to be, characterized by low scalability, high transaction latency and high transaction fees. The early (34%) and late (34%) majority are the largest part and the most secure phases in a company's development. There are, however, cases when the company fails - the ‘laggards’ as Hsuan calls them - are about 16% of all. Blockchain adoption by companies will be as difficult process as the transition from appearance of apps to their everyday viral usage. It will happen, however.

Will the blockchain industry change digital advertising?

Hristo Hristov is the CEO of NetInfo and Official Representative and Chairman of IAB. He joined Webit.Festival Europe 2018 to share some insights on the future of Blockchain in digital media and advertising.
The crypto market exploded over the last three years. A lot of industries started looking at blockchain as a technology, as to whether it can solve some of their biggest challenges.

Let's look at blockchain:

Blockchain as a technology is still at its infancy. We're still at the hype cycle and blockchain is sitting right next to autonomous vehicles which I don't see happening in the next two or three years and Event-triggered marketing. So as a technology, blockchain might grow into something big like the internet or even bigger, but it might also fade away into some narrow use cases.

How can Blockchain improve the Digital Media and advertising landscape?

There are some use cases which are rather obvious:  * Fraud detection and prevention  * User Identity  * Buying and selling inventory, etc

Centralization vs. Decentralization

Trust a third party or to use a decentralized approach?

Decentralization PROs

* Durability, reliability and longevity - Due to the decentralized networks, blockchain does not have a central point of failure and is better able to withstand malicious attacks. * Process integrity - Users can trust that transactions will be executed exactly as the protocol commands removing the need for a trusted third party. * High quality data - Blockchain data is complete, consistent, timely, accurate and widely available. * Transparency and immutability - Changes to public blockchain are publicly viewable by all parties creating transparency. All transactions are immutable, which means they cannot be altered or deleted.

Decentralization CONs

* Trusted 3rd parties - it's not Central vs Decentralized. The advertising ecosystem is based on trusted third parties. These 3rd parties are innovation drivers. * It's too slow - Digital advertising is real-time. RTB standard requires service response in 100ms.

There are several examples which already use blockchain in addressing some of digital advertising's biggest challenges.

adChain tries to create a token curated registry of publishers in order to verify and simplify the buying. And papyrus is a decentralized programmatic value management platform aimed to radically improve programmatic advertising stack. All of these solutions are in the making, they are not really ready but they are evolving pretty fast. Several years ago we were talking about mobile apps, then AI, now blockchain. The hype cycles of few years ago were longer and we used to have more time to adapt to them. But now they are becoming shorter and they’re starting to overlap. It wasn’t long long ago that we were talking about programmatic buying. Now it is programmatic buying on a decentralized exchange powered by blockchain.
